THE south Downs collection 2017
“Are we not all haunted by certain landscapes which come back unbidden,
not as common topographical facts, but as vestures of the soul?”
From: Kipling’s Sussex by R. Thurston Hopkins, 1920
THIS NEW COLLECTION OF SCARVES AND CARDIGANS
takes its inspiration from the natural topography of the South Downs and the artists who visited and painted this landscape during the mid-20th century. In these ancient fields and downs we encounter the enduring patterns and textures that entranced English painters such as Ravillous and Nicholson and poets like Kipling and Belloc. The soft Sussex light still produces the same muted colours that defined and illuminated their work. Linzi spent her childhood immersed in the landscape of the South Downs. After a period studying art, she started her own designer knitwear label, exhibiting in London Fashion Week and selling internationally from her studio in the Oxo Tower on London's South Bank. Linzi returned to the landscapes of her childhood a few years ago to open a studio in the lovely old Cinque Port of Rye in East Sussex. Here she has filled her tiny 18th century shop in Needle Passage with the muted colours and intricate designs inspired by the topographical flint and chalk hillsides, the cliffs and the beaches of the South Downs..
